So, after much Deep Thought and Internal Debate, I’ve come to the conclusion that Peanut Butter is pretty much the perfect sandwich. It stands well on its own, but you can take it practically anywhere depending on how dressed up it gets.
Note: Generic Peanut Butter IS NOT Peanut Butter. Generic Peanut Butter is what animal control does with the excess dog poop at the end of the day.
Everyone has their favorite brand, and that’s really up to you. Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan, they all pretty much fill the bill. Anything holistic and natural that you actually like the taste of is fine. Myself, I have no patience for peanut butter that separates – I’m here to eat, not remix a convenience food.
Once you have a favorite, the bread comes next. I prefer Brownberry Health Nut, but it’s really whatever sets off your comfort food zone buzzer the loudest. Some people insist white bread is the only way, but I find it doesn’t hold up to the spread, and if the bread doesn’t support the peanut butter it just isn’t worthy in my book. Lightly toasted is nice, and it makes the peanut butter melt just a tad.
And then comes the art. What to dress it with? Pair it with? Blend it with? What does your mouth and your brain crave at this particular moment in time?
Peanut butter and strawberry jelly. Peanut butter and cream cheese. Peanut butter and butter. Peanut butter and raisins. Peanut butter and very thinly sliced apple. Peanut butter and honey. Peanut butter and banana. Peanut butter and fig jam. Peanut butter and pear chutney. Peanut butter and Hershey’s syrup.
And then your mouth explodes, and your soul grows a little bit larger.
